Brand New Woman
With cancer treatments, it is fairly well-known that the cancer patient will experience some kind of hair loss during the treatment, but the degree of hair loss is as individual as the cancer patient and the cancer treatment itself. Originally, I was told that I would probably not lose my hair, but then my chemo doctor said it will grow back. Confused... I started to talk with other cancer patients about their hair loss experience. Some patients lost their hair immediately, and had a smooth, shiny bald head. Others didn't lose their head hair, but lost it everywhere else. One man joked that he didn't have to shave his legs now... so there might be a silver-lining here! A breast cancer patient said her hair started coming out in clumps after the second chemo treatment. Armed with this various information, I was seeing that my long hair was starting to come out in strands prior to my second chemo treatment. No more than seasonal hair loss, but I was expecting to have similar results to the breast cancer patient since our treatments seemed similar in type and duration. Instead of waiting for clumps, I wanted to get ahead of the hair loss if I could.
Funny enough, I thought I would be upset about the hair loss aspect of cancer. No, just buzz it off. My vanity wasn't what it was when I was younger. I was already sick of the covid19 hairdo anyways, so being bald was just another version of hair styles of 2020 in my mind. I had already started to plan my wig accessories... and that seemed fun! A couple Wish wigs on order, and my purple wig from Halloween, I was going to be in style, any which way I wanted.
I booked my hair appointment to do the buzz. After some assessment of my hair condition, I still had a full head of thick hair. Instead of the buzz I was going to do, my hair dresser convinced me to style it shorter. I liked this idea too... just have to wait and see what my hair loss situation will be as I progress through my cancer treatments.
So it looks like I am a brand new woman... sporting a shorter and classic hair do!!

That style looks really good on you! And it is short enough to still play with the wigs if you want.
ReplyDeleteHi Max. Yes, the bottom pictures are of the wig I got to play with. It is shorter and curly, so something totally different from my normal hair style.

ReplyDeleteHAHA Stacey! Yes, definitely there will be wings when the hair starts to grow out some. It is weird right now, almost helmet like. It's not the ponytail of the last several years, so good timing for a change anyways! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Susan
ReplyDeleteI love following your updates! You are an inspiration! Hair is not where it’s at anymore, just buzz it! I have had my buzz since June of ‘96 when my mom was going through her chemo treatments and she was losing her hair in clumps. She came over one day and asked me to buzz her hair? I said “I’ll do yours if you do mine?” We braved that storm together and I haven’t had long hair since, I love the shorter hair! Short hair = zero maintenance! It’s a tribute to my mom that I will honour for life! ❤️
Your smile shines with shorter hair! Wishing you a healthy journey, take care both you and Mike❤️ Prayers to you both!
Looking forward to reading future blogs!
