Recovery, Rest, and Reclaim

In these days of recovery since my last chemo treatment on February 16th, I made another hat.  I really like this sun hat because it comes down over my ears and the back of my neck to keep me warm.  Cancer patients feel cold... and so I have had several days under the blanket with the sunshine coming in through the window.  I sit here in my sun hat and wait for warmer days to come, and I'm listening to my body as I figure out what recovery and self-care means.  It usually means curling up like the cat in the sunshine and having a restful nap.

I was reminded that March 3rd was six months to the day since my surgery to remove the cancerous tumour, and since then I have breezed through cancer treatments:  25 outside radiation, 3 brachytherapy radiation, and 6 chemo treatments.  I am lucky that I have had so much medical support and got fast-tracked through my cancer journey to recovery during a pandemic.  My first check up will be May 20th, at the 3-month post cancer treatments.  I am both excited and anxious to know where I am at in my recovery as a cancer survivor.  As time passes and I accumulate cancer-free check up results, I know this will build my confidence that I have cancer beat!!   I am this far, and I'm doing ok...  I am reclaiming my health and life one day at a time.  These next months I should see my fatigue and neuropathy fade, and my strength and stamina grow.  I should also see hair regrowth over the next 3 to 6 months.  There is a lot of great things to look forward too.  Lots of great victories to come... :)

  3. Glad you are coming along even if it is slow. Keep trudging along. Spring is coming as is the nice weather - then you can get outside a little more and continue to boost your strength.

  4. Sounds like you are on the right track, like your spirit. I'm sure you have been told but don't be surprised if your hair is completely different then it was. It was exactly one year ago I had my first chemo, lost all my hair in 2 weeks and going for my 1st hair trim on April 3rd. As you remember my hair was always straight and blonde. I now have curly black hair with one gray strip..lol. still get surprised when I look in the mirror.
Keeping you in my thoughts and hope spring comes fast to warm.

  5. Thank you Sandy for sharing your experience. I understand about looking in the mirror and being surprised. I still see a bald stranger, but I am anxious to see how my hair comes back. I got a couple wigs but so far I am most comfortable in a warm hat. I have been enjoying the warm sunshine coming through the window. I hope you are feeling the warmth too. It's a life journey we are on... xoxoxo
